Blue Binder

The Blue Binder is situated within Patershol, the medieval district of Ghent. Common to the district is a typology of houses that do not have an ordered and regular plot and built definition as these houses were built aggregatively over time.

The design intention was therefore to seek a coherence among the chaos of this built fabric but keeping intervention to a near minimal. A light metal frame with a defining cornice of perforated metal was created. The support columns for this structure was defined at regular intervals to create a sense of order through repetition. At defined locations, the mullions for the interior space are integrated with the columns. The regularity of the columns, becoming an organiser both spatially and functionally.
